I Meant To Do That

…Kinda like Black Canary, except gross.

Welp, my laptop finally bit the dust (I think) and it’s in the repair shop now. Most likely looking at a new hard drive, but at least in the meantime I’ve got the school Cintiqs to work on. I’m not too worried since I backed the whole thing up pretty regularly, but it’s still really damn inconvenient, especially since this is midterm week. Guh.

Since it’s only a matter of time before it dies altogether, I’ve been eyeing the MS Surface Pro or the Cintiq Companion as a replacement. Both of them are way out of the budget right now, but I figure if I start saving up I might be able to swing it as a graduation present to myself. I’d love to hear if any of you guys have any experience with either one of the two (or any alternative).

The Cintiq Companions are insanely overpriced. I had a Surface Pro for a weekend but I didn’t like it, mostly because I thought the screen was too small but I have a 20″ Cintiq. I know Mike @ Penny Arcade really likes his and the new Surface Pro 2 or whatever it’s going to be called has the same form factor and screen size but addresses some of the issues the first device had.

Personally I’m going to wait for the Lenovo Yoga Thinkpad 13, which has a higher res and larger screen. That should be out in November. Really what I’d like is the Samsung ATIV-Q which seems like the slickest one (also possibly crazy expensive), but is currently in patent dispute limbo, and if it ever does come out, it will probably be the middle of next year.

Yeah the size of the Surface Pro is definitely a deal breaker for me. I tried one of them out at Best Buy and it just strained my eyes. I’ve definitely gotten spoiled from using a Cintiq. If they could just fix that one thing, I’d probably be on board with it.

I’ve heard some good things about the Lenovo, but not much about the Samsung, so I’ll have to check that out. I probably won’t be able to afford any of them till the middle of next year anyway, so it kind of works out, haha.
